Second meeting 21/10/09

As a group we discussed TRANSDISCIPLINARITY and talked about a few of the sites from the URL http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~infoarts/links/wilson.artlinks2.html.

We also looked at Christa Sommerer & Laurent Mignonneau and their work with interactive media. Their work has been called "epoch-making" (Toshiharu Itoh, NTT-ICC Museum, Tokyo) for developing natural and intuitive interfaces and for applying scientific principles such as artificial life, complexity, generative systems and nanotechnologies to their innovative interface design.

Roy Ascott “The construction of change” was also highlighted. At first glance he seems to explore and discuss how technological advancements and artificial intelligence, as well as interativity "New Media" in our society effect the creation of art.

First reading 18/10/09

2. TRANSDISCIPLINARITY, 21 Oct> A general introduction to the trend for art-science collaborations and> research agendas.>> Reading:> Stephen Wilson (2002) 'Introduction, Methodology, Definitions and> Theoretical Overview', in _Information Arts: Intersections of Art,> Science and Technology_, Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, pp. 1-48,> http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~infoarts/links/wilson.artlinks2.html

Started looking at a few of the links on the site. Intially looked at the work of:

Shu Lea Cheang

Consisting of spinning amusement park teacups with rubber baby clones linked wirelessly to visitor choices of music. You can then sit in the cup and scratch like a DJ using the wheel at the centre of the ride to rotate back and forth.

John Slepian

These virtual objects are clearly fictitious, yet they can inspire empathy, disgust, and fascination. They are intended to elicit an awareness of the disjunctions that can occur between one's emotional and intellectual reactions, and thereby provoke in the viewer a consideration of the process through which we come to identify with the objects of our gaze.

“Cornered” (tree with LCD screen inserted that has animation of creature shaking leaves at bottom of tree!, plays as people come close.

Julian Oliver

Level Head
http://julianoliver.com/levelhead

LevelHead uses a hand-held solid-plastic cube as its only interface. On-screen it appears each face of the cube contains a little room, each of which are logically connected by doors. In one of these rooms is a character. By tilting the cube the player directs this character from room to room in an effort to find the exit. (view image)

Electroscape.org is a new place/space/network, an open project through
which digital and mutated landscape, mixed or enhanced reality, “infoscape”
and electromagnetic territories are questioned.
What are the new memes, the new schemes? What are the new possibilities
for architecture?
The idea is to share on Electroscape.org some concepts, protos, designs,
with other digital designers, programmers and contemporary
thinkers. Electroscape.org is also a digital experimentation and exhibition
structure, a kind of new (movable, downloadable) gallery, both
micro and macro architecture at the same time.

Structure based on lighting and one continuous line!

I am very interested in using Second Life to improve interest and relevance of contextual/theory based modules on my Foundation Degee Animation and Multimedia courses. As such the virtual environment and the building of meshes within it play a big part in how students or users interact with that world.

Some of the links I have looked at so far, as part of this reading, have generated a few ideas in my mind, specifically in how the design of a building can immerse a visitor. I am particullary inspired by the work of Fabric.
